How does your organization differentiate between health disparities and inequities? Some use the terms interchangeably; others use a version that places accountability or blame on a marginalized group for adverse health outcomes. The 2024 Future of Health Equity Conference is designed to explore the framework, trends, research, and hot topics from a wide spectrum of different stakeholder perspectives.
Exploring health equity from multiple perspectives illustrates the nuance and complexity involved in transforming systems and solving for fairness, versus viewing the issue as a zero-sum or standalone activity. Additionally, the goals of health equity can be experienced when organizations operationalize outcomes through a community lens and employ an intersectional approach to close harmful gaps. Beyond eliminating inequities, it’s also important to prioritize healthier lifestyles for patients and the professionals who serve them.
The CDC defines health disparities as the metric used to measure and describe the differences in health equity outcomes between different groups, while health equity is the state in which everyone has a fair and just opportunity to attain their highest level of health.
Achieving health equity requires a multi-faceted approach that addresses the underlying social determinants of health, improves access to healthcare services, promotes cultural competency and diversity in healthcare, engages communities, advocates for policy change, and invests in data collection and monitoring efforts. While the challenges to health equity are significant, with concerted effort and collaboration, we can progress towards a more equitable healthcare future.
The Future of Health Equity Conference is a practitioner-led event that brings together culture, community, and patient advocacy to form innovative ideas, better practices, and holistic policies that bring about meaningful change. Our sessions present a unique blend of health equity subject matter expertise and a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) lens or specialized focus on patient and staff experiences.
The conference will engage subject matter experts who are DEIA leaders as well as human resource professionals, business professionals, healthcare executives, researchers, resource group members, consultants, and students. Professionals from hospitals and other healthcare organizations, the pharmaceutical industry, medical equipment manufacturers, health insurers, regulatory agencies, non-governmental organizations, research bodies, and educational institutions will gather for two days to share best practices, network, and innovate.
